LLUC QUERALT. The photographer and painter from Tarragona that always searches for the essence while playing with geometry and precise instants.
By Laia Beltran
MAYBE EVERYTHING started with an AE-1 Canon. ‘It was a gift to my mother the day I was born and, years later, she gave it to me’. Lluc Queralt cannot precisely tell when he got addicted to taking pictures. As a good skater, his memories slide. But someone told him he had a good eye, so he sign up to a photography workshop in Tarragona. He also started painting around that time. And to travel a lot. The US, Island, Bolivia, Syria, Iran, Cuba, Armenia, North Korea … ‘I like to search, discover, to leave a record’.
He does not have a method, but he does have some obsessions. ‘I play a lot with the geometry of images’. Lluc searches for perfect lines while catching precise instants. He quotes Cartier-Bresson and we speak about the similarities between photography and psychology, for a portrait is more than a minimal physical distance, it is also a state of mind.
Lluc Queralt shoots in both digital and analogue. ‘It only depends on the circumstances’ , he adds up. He is also not concern about the theme; when something catches his eye, he just follows through. And it is this way, in the most casual manner, that he started portraying people from the circus, in black and white and always outside the ring. ‘It is a world inside of our world, people in constant movement that do not have where to settle down’ . Lluc Queralt previously did it with cloistered nuns, and now he is giving the final touches to a project based on the vestiges of Communism. The secret? ‘To always search for the essence’.
